Reading’s Green Park has started the new year by becoming the only business park in the UK to achieve the prestigious Wildlife Trust’s Biodiversity Benchmark award.
The award recognises and rewards businesses for their continual efforts to improve biodiversity. The Biodiversity Benchmark rigorously assessed and certified Green Park’s systems for achieving continual biodiversity protection and wildlife enhancement at the 195-acre business community.
To achieve the Wildlife Trust’s Biodiversity Benchmark Green Park had to demonstrate:
a proactive management of existing wildlife rich sites and sites of conservation importance;
the establishment of wildlife habitats on land previously used for other purposes; and
create sites which contribute towards a network of habitats, enhancing the permeability of the landscape to wildlife.
The award follows the ISO 50001 accreditation achieved in December 2015 for Green Park’s energy management programme.
Rory Carson, Director-Asset Manager at Green Park said: “We are thrilled to have been able to achieve the high standard needed for the Wildlife Trust’s Biodiversity Benchmark. The team here at Green Park work extremely hard to create a fantastic environment for businesses and their people. Green Park is living testimony that commercial and biodiversity interests can live harmoniously together within the same development, and to mutual benefit.”
Peter Dorans, Corporate Relations Manager for the Wildlife Trust said: “Every organisation depends in some way on the natural environment. There is a challenging and rigorous process needed to secure the Biodiversity Benchmark, and I offer my warmest congratulations to Green Park on achieving so much for wildlife. I look forward to continuing to work with the team over the coming months and years.”
